FÁILTE ROIMH GO LÉIR!
Welcome to the Website of the Wolfetones - Western Mass Youth Gaelic Games.  Our mission is to teach the children of Western Massachusetts about Gaelic football, one of two national sports played in Ireland with the other being Hurling.  Gaelic football is great exercise, and develops a sense of teamwork as well as assisting each player in fine tuning their motor skills and coordination.  The Wolfetones are open to all children ages 5-16.

Spring Skills Schedule

Picture
Well with only a few official hours of winter remaining on the calendar, what better time to share our Gaelic Football Spring Skills schedule.  As previously noted, this set of clinics will be held in Holyoke at the John J Lynch Middle School, 1575 Northampton St.  It's a great chance to grow our team including new players from Holyoke as well as reconnecting with those Holyoke Players from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Tell your friends and relatives, the Wolfetones are back in Holyoke!  We are open to all children, ages 5-16 who are interested in fun and football.

Spring Skills Clinics

Sunday April 7th,    11:15-12:45
Sunday April 14th   11:15-12:45
Sunday April 21st,  11:15-12:45

Originally, we had March 24 on the schedule and noticed it was Palm Sunday. Sorry about any confusion.

Great round of applause to the kids and families who were able to march this past Sunday in the Holyoke St Patrick's Parade. With over 400,000 spectators and 15,000 marchers, the Wolfetones GFC may have been the loudest group to walk the 2.65 miles in that sunny cold!

Special thanks to Judy, Vanessa, Kate and Sheila for working the Wolfe Tones concert last Wednesday.  The Wolfe Den was working the fundraising by selling our new Wolfetones merchandise and pulling the 50/50 raffle.

Enjoy your Easter,
Michael Connally

Wolfetones and the Springfield Falcons Host "IRISH NIGHT" at the Mass Mutual Center

Picture

On Friday, March 1st, the Wolfetones kicked off the St Patrick's Holiday season with the Springfield Falcons and their "Irish Night" celebration. Section 26 was filled with Wolfetones' green hoodies, as the team cheered the Falcons to a 7-2 victory over the Phantoms of Adirondack. The Wolfe Den did a great job getting the word out on short notice, selling 57 tickets as well as running a very successful game jersey raffle. Successful?  The Wolfetones set a Springfield Falcon's record for raffle tickets sales and raised an easy $900 for our club!! That's what I call scoring one for the home team!

Wolfetones Close out their Winter Clinic Sessions with a Great Turnout!

Picture
The Wolfetones would like to thank all of the parents and their kids for coming out to our Winter Skills Clinics this year.  We had a very good and consistent turnout for the three snow-time sessions. Several new faces have joined the Wolfetones Family and like any family, the MORE the MERRIER!   It may have been drizzling outside, but the kids were all smiles and hustle as they spent the session playing their hearts out.

Facebook Friends, Check Out Boston Northeast Minor Board Page.

Picture
The Boston Northeast Minor Board is our league's governing body. They work hard at providing Gaelic Football education and competition throughout New England.  The have launched a Facebook page and are in the process of constructing a website. We will be adding links to all of the teams within the Boston Northeast Minor Board early next month. This week they are profiling our team, the Wolfetones.  Check them out and give them a "like" or a comment. Great job to James Tierney, our league's Public relations Officer, for pulling it all together!

Wolfetones' skills clinics are combining fun, football techniques and friendly competition!

Picture
FEINT
Sunday, February 17th kicked off school vacation week in Western Mass and the Wolfetones had a great clinic with some very enthusiastic children at the St. Mary's High School.  After practicing  High Catches, Punt Kicks, Feints and Near Hand Tackles,  the Yellow and Red teams displayed some healthy competitive spirit.  The Blue and Green squads closed the session with smiles and a closely contested match.  We have one more Skills session scheduled for  next Sunday, February 24th before our St Patrick's break.  We will be picking the the skills sessions at Lynch School in Holyoke on March 24th and April 7th and 14th.

Wolfetones kickoff the preseason with a skills clinic.

Picture
Sunday's skills clinic had many of our seasoned players as well as some new faces.  About 30 kids came out to start their Superbowl Sunday with Ireland's most popular sport, Gaelic Football. The scrimmages at the end of the clinic, helped all the players get some exercise and practice those football skills. Our next two clinics are scheduled for Feb 17 and 24, 1230-130 at St Mary's High School.  Thanks to Pat Smith and Father Brian  for arranging the use of the school gym!

The Wolfetones Prepare for 2013!
Check Out the Updated Calendar for New Clinic Dates!

Picture
The Wolfetones have scheduled their first three clinics of the 2013 season.  February 3rd, 17th and 24th from 12:30 to 1:30 at St. Mary's High School, 27 Bartlett St, Westfield. It's a great time to get out of the cold and brush off those Gaelic football skills. Great exercise and a lot of fun learning or sharpening those ball handling skills.

These are just the first set of clinics planned to help the team get ready for an exciting new season with an entirely new approach to scheduling games.  Besides these three, we plan on three more at the end of March/early April (in Holyoke if possible) and three final outdoor clinics/trainings in May prior to the official start of the game schedule.

We have been busy planning some great events throughout the year for the kids as well as the parents. Check out the Calendar Page for a quick glimpse at an early events.  Some additional items that are in the planning phase but the dates are still up in the air include
Celebrity Bartending JBO v SOE, Comedy Night and Springfield Falcon's welcome the Wolfetones.  Many of the ideas this year will include fundraising as we are making every attempt to offset the cost of traveling and staying in Philly for each of our families for the CYC this year.

Donegal defeats Mayo and are the
All Ireland Football Champions.

Picture
What a great crowd this Sunday at the JBO.  It was a full house enjoying the All Ireland finals in the member's lounge downstairs. We had a strong Mayo contingent, Wolfetone players all sugared up on cupcakes and cookies as well as the one or two lonely Donegal fans (Mr. Darcey) celebrating their victory.  It was a great day had by all. Especially, Tom McCarthy of Springfield, who won the Kerry jersey at the completion of the final. Congratulations Tom and thanks to all of the Wolfetones supporters who participated in the raffle. Judy, Vanessa and Sheila, once again rocked the hospitality by running a bake sale, preparing breakfast sandwiches and selling the final raffle tickets. What a great success.  Check out Facebook for some shots of our sugared players!

The sun was shining , the kids were smiling and Irish music was in the air this Sunday at the Sons of Erin. Sheila Foley and her team hosted a wonderful day!
The Wolfetones' football kick around had some fresh faces as well a sea of green Wolfetones shirts. "Eamonn's Academy of Hurling" made his final clinic of the season and generated more than a few glances from the crowd of onlookers.
The Wolfe Den was busy with raffle  ticket and merchandise sales while peaking the interest of some new recruits. They were the hit of "merchant's row".

Special thanks to Judy Cournoyer, Vanessa Duffy, Meg Shea and Sheila Connally for running an awesome table and donating some raffle and baked goods! Seamus Darcey, Packie Smith, Chris Shea and Eamonn Burke kept the balls flying and the ash clashing.  Thanks to all of our Wolfetones families for coming out and enjoying a great day of Irish fun.

Wolfetones Edge Hartford with Great Team Play!

Picture
Our Wolfetones played a brilliant game against our southern partners at Hartford GAA.  Our kids used their technical skills to outwit the aggressive style of Hartford. Both teams displayed great sportsmanship as the two teams met for pizza downstairs at the Irish American Home Society after the match. The Wolfetones did their best at enjoying Hartford's hospitality.  Thanks Hartford.

Wolfetones represent Western Mass GAA at the MGSA 2012 GAA Blitz

Tomas and Cathal Carney, Marcus and Colin Kane, Jack, Riley and Rory Shea, Moira and Liam Cournoyer, Liam and Clare Murphy, Dylan Sullivan and Conor, Deirdre and Declan Connally represented the Wolfetones. Then, an afternoon of football and hurling matches showcased some great competition and excellent sportsmanship. The Wolfetones joined St Brendan's, Worcester and the Gaels on the pitch for an unforgettable day.  To cap off the event, our gracious hosts treated the players, coaches and families to a BBQ on the beach.  Hats off to the MGSA for their gracious hospitality and an excellent day of GAA competition.               LOOK FOR THE EVENT PICTURES ON THE "WOLFE TONE GAELIC FOOTBALL" FACEBOOK PAGE SOON!

Wolfetones expand their GAA program with their first Hurling Clinic.

Picture
The Wolfetones had their first taste of the "fastest game on grass" as Eamonn Burke directed their first ever Hurling Clinic.  It was a lot of fun as the team tried some skills before competing in an intrasquad scrimmage.  Eamonn made his Tribesmen proud as the players embraced the new sport and are looking forward to future clinics and matches. Thanks Eamonn. Along with the the clinic, the Wolfetones players received new t-shirts with the Wolfetones logo  smartly displayed on the back.  Shirts are free to Wolfetones players and available for purchase ($10) at the JBO Feis (8/11/12) or by emailing Kate Carney at katecollinscarney@gmail.com.
